With the abolition of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918, Austria itself seemed to have lost its meaning. Karl Renner was dismayed on receiving the treaty's crippling terms, but against great odds he managed to forge the roots of a modern state throughout the interwar years and in the aftermath of WWII.
